The Dutch government helps households with a low or average income through allowances (toeslagen). They are paid monthly by the Tax Administration’s Toeslagen department.
The main allowances
- Healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag): up to €129 a month single, €246 with a partner (2026)
- Rent allowance (huurtoeslag): for tenants with a low income and a rent within the limits
- Childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag): when you work and your child goes to registered childcare
- Child-related budget (kindgebonden budget): for parents with a low or average income
Avoid paying back
- Use a realistic estimate of your income – also bonuses and a 13th month
- Report changes straight away: new job, partner, moving house
- Check your allowances again after your tax return

Questions
Why do I have to pay back allowance?
Allowances are an advance based on your expected income. If your income turns out higher, you pay back the difference. Change your income in Mijn toeslagen as soon as it changes.
How long can I apply afterwards?
Until 1 September of the year after. For example: allowance for 2026 can be requested until 1 September 2027.
Is my partner’s income counted?
Yes. For allowances the income of your allowance partner is added to yours.
Is the allowance check really free?
Yes, when we do your income tax return. We check your allowances against the income on your return.
