123 Tax › Leaving the Netherlands · Last checked: 26 October 2026

Moving abroad? Before you go, deregister at your municipality, stop your allowances and close your Dutch tax year properly. For the year you leave you file the M form – the same special return as in the year of arrival.

  • Deregister at your municipality, at the earliest 5 days before you leave
  • Stop allowances and check your provisional assessment
  • Keep your DigiD – you still need it after you leave
  • Keep payslips, the final annual statement and proof of your departure date

Questions

Do I need to file when I leave?

Yes. For the year you leave you file the M form, covering the part of the year you lived in the Netherlands.

What about my allowances?

Stop them before you leave. Allowances usually end when you are no longer registered in the Netherlands, and amounts paid too much must be paid back.

I had the 30% ruling. What changes?

The ruling ends when your Dutch employment ends. Ask your employer for your final annual statement – you need it for the M form.

Can you still help me when I live abroad?

Yes. We work online and file with an authorisation, so you do not need to come back for it.

M form or tax return done for you?The M form for € 149, the normal income tax return for € 59 – incl. VAT, in your language.
